Inter-High: Dear Author Letter
Hello there, mystery creator!
I tried to put a bit of information in my sign-up requests, but I'm always so happy to have the space to talk directly about what I love and loathe in exchange stories. I absolutely adore sports series in general because the format really appeals to me, and because the themes of teamwork, competition, and friendship are exactly what I love in stories. Hopefully since you're also participating with this exchange, our tastes will overlap nicely!
Also wow I'm sorry in advance for how long this is, I'm just assuming that you're matched with me based on one or two fandoms and can skip the parts of this for ones you don't know.
In a general sense, I like the slice-of-life aspect of sports series. They're all about kids growing up in the real world who have to go to school, and make friends, and who are brought together by their mutual love of playing a particular sport. I like things that play with the ordinary being extraordinary, because when it comes down to it, a game is just a game, but for sports anime protagonists it might as well be life or death. I also live for the rivalries in sports series -- my favorite kinds of relationships are ones with interesting power dynamics, and seeing two characters struggling to defeat each other and improving in tandem with each other really plays into what I love to see.
In terms of things I don't like seeing, I'm not big on angst or tragedy. Of the series I read/watch, Daiya no Ace is on the far end of what I can take -- there are injuries, and the narrative treats the characters a lot more harshly than more feel-good series like Haikyuu. I'd rather not read anything that involves serious injury, illness, or death. I watch sports series because their outlook is so optimistic; anything really dark is what I want to avoid. In the same vein, I'd like to avoid anything that deals with rape or abuse.
If you want to depart from canon, I LOVE AUs of all varieties, particularly futuristic and fantastical ones. Besides my specific prompts, I'll take a good AU for pretty much any series or ship I'm asking for. My prompts are very ship-focused but if that's not your thing, an interesting AU gen fic is something I'll love. I also LOVE thoughtful characterization, character-focused stories are my jam. I like seeing tropes inverted or played with in unexpected ways, and I like touches of humor in prose that's otherwise more sober.
Chihayafuru
For this fandom, I've GOTTEN exchange fic before and it WAS just what I asked for, but I am eternally starved for these characters so I'll share the same thing I wrote about them in my last dear author letter:
The story I'd love to see the most would be a Taichi/Chihaya/Arata OT3 exploration. I'll even take romance as minimal or intense as you want to give, in exchange for a story that examines how each "bar" of the triangle relate to each other in contrast to how the other "bars" work. I particularly want to see it touched on how single-focused Chihaya becomes, and how Taichi and Arata would have to put in extra work to make a relationship with her work because Chihaya honestly takes more than she gives. Super bonus points for Taichi and Arata having to be each other's support as they support Chihaya, because she just gets so hyper-focused and sometimes forgets their needs.
And to be a little more specific, I'd love to see something focused on a specific challenge one or all of them is facing? Especially if you're more comfortable writing gen than polyamory, this is a good route to take to make me happy. I just really love the contrast between each "bar" of the triangle's dynamic, and I'd like to see something more "active" since the story I previously received for this fandom was more "passive" and domestic (which I love, don't get me wrong, but I also love mixing it up).
If you're not feeling this character combination, though, this is also salvaged from my previous letter:
"(the other thing) I'd love to pieces would be a Chihaya/Oe or Chihaya/Shinobu fic. I'd prefer romancey connotations, but gen is also great. I just find it really interesting what Oe gets out of Karuta, as someone who loves it for the poetry more than the competition, and would love to see that contrasted with Chihaya's bull-headed stubbornness. I think they would be really good for each other, with their contrasting personalities.
On the flipside, Shinobu is pretty much the exact same personality type as Chihaya, and that's why I'd really like to see them butting heads as rivals and feeding off of each other's competitive sides. They also both have their individual points of weirdness, and I'd love fic that touches on the ways in which they are both just strange, strange people."
Oofuri
Not gonna lie, for me Oofuri is D/s: A Baseball Story. Abe and Mihashi's entire trajectory in the anime is a perfect analogue for two people in a relationship learning how to trust each other after bad experiences -- Mihashi with his previous team and the number that did on his self-esteem, and Abe with his previous (abusive ex) pitcher and the handful of hangups that experience gave him. A lot of it is intuition more so than conscious understanding, but Abe so quickly learns how to handle Mihashi and tend to his needs and all I ever need in the world is GOOD DOM ABE, I need it with uncontainable intensity. For his part Mihashi just wants so badly to please Abe and make him proud and have Abe think well of him, it ruins me.
So, predictably, I want D/s abemiha more than anything. Pornographic content not at all required. One of my absolute favorite things is caretaking, so I'd really just love to see Abe getting to a point of consciously understanding what upsets Mihashi or makes him nervous and going out of his way to make sure Mihashi is comfortable and taken care of. Preferably featuring lots of touching and hand-holding because this is Oofuri. If you want to go the porn route, I'm super into the potential power dynamics and control aspect but I want the sex to be sweet. Abe takes control because that's what puts Mihashi the most at ease; I just want Abe catering to and spoiling Mihashi because gosh darn it Mihashi deserves that.
If you'd rather step outside the box a little, I'd also love to see some kind of AU. Like, abemiha is the big ship and if you somehow DON'T ship it I don't know what to tell you about writing for me because this virtually does not compute, but that means prompting for abemiha feels pretty run of the mill. If you want to mix it up, any AU where Abe is in a protector role relative to Mihashi is almost definitely something I will eat up with a goddamn spoon.
(I'm having visions of knight Abe and prince Mihashi and getting a little emotional. Also please imagine: a cyberpunk-esque setting with programmer Abe who's making all the decisions and trying to control the environment for Mihashi in some virtual-world environment because Mihashi has to be the active one but Abe needs to keep him safe.

Once again all I want is OT3 fic, because my rudimentary attempts at unearthing daiyace fic with polyamory have been entirely unsuccessful. Of my sports series, daiyace is the roughest for me. The coach is the harshest to the players, and unlike a lot of sports series where the protagonists are total underdogs who can barely get a team together, daiyace is set at a good sports school with a team of one hundred players. There's a really different tone to having to fight just to BE ON YOUR TEAM, as opposed to fighting WITH your team to defeat tough opponents. And I dig it a lot, because I love seeing characters struggle against adversity only to overcome it in the end, and honestly, I love seeing characters struggle with those others who are supposed to be on THEIR SIDE. Daiyace has that inherently -- Eijun and Furuya both want to pitch, and at any given time in a real game, only one of them can be on the mound.
So basically, I want fic that touches on the way these characters interrelate and oppose each other, but most of all I want shipfic where Miyuki has Eijun in one hand and Furuya in the other, because AO3 thinks Miyuki/Eijun and Miyuki/Furuya are the first and second most popular ships respectively but why can I find nothing with all three of them together. I looooove every canon instance of Miyuki (and the rest of the team) manipulating their little baby pitchers to get the desired behavior out of them, and I love Furuya flat-out telling Miyuki he's twisted and GOD, do I love Miyuki explaining how Eijun (and from the rest of the conversation, Furuya in his own way) is SO ATTRACTIVE as a pitcher.
I just want Miyuki with his two boyfriends who he can get to do virtually anything he wants with a laugh and a grin because he has both of their fucking numbers. And I want Eijun and Furuya's similarity touched on, because they're both driven and dedicated in the same way and there are points where the anime stresses their being alike.
Sexual content would be adored but not required. If you're feeling it, I'm super feeling Miyuki who's in charge but not necessarily on top. Gotta get those attractive pitchers to work for him, amirite. If you're REALLY not feeling the OT3, I will also take Miyuki/Eijun without Furuya, although I'm admittedly not super into Miyuki/Furuya without Eijun so I'd rather not receive that. If you want to go more PG-13, a focus on how much the other person means to whichever character is most of what I want to see.
Hikaru no Go
The thing I love most about Hikaru no Go is Hikaru and Akira's fated rivalry. There's the whole unfortunate circumstance of Akira chasing Sai without KNOWING about Sai, and thinking he's chasing Hikaru, and Hikaru chasing Akira in return. I absolutely adore how, in his insei days, Hikaru just boldly declares that Touya Akira is his rival and everyone thinks he's off his nut, but slowly they come to see that HUH, Touya really does pay a curious amount of attention to Hikaru??
They're so incredibly hyper-focused on each other and I just want to see that in a relationship context with kissing and touching also, always.
Alternately, I have a weird and potentially horrifying proposition. Ogata also takes a particular interest in Hikaru and like with Akira, it's because of Sai. So if you're feeling bold and/or depraved, I'd love to see something where Ogata is INTERESTED in Sai, and comes to learn that Sai and Hikaru are functionally one and the same, and continues to pursue Sai. I'll take it with one of two executions, too -- Ogata thinking Hikaru IS SAI and wooing/making advances on Hikaru directly, or Ogata understanding that Sai is more or less possessing Hikaru, and courting Hikaru more as a conduit to the mind that he's enamored with.
In a similar vein, I'd also enjoy fic where Ogata takes his awareness of Touya's rivalry with Hikaru -- he does directly interfere in canon, calling Akira out on his continuing interest in Hikaru even when Akira is insisting he's done -- and plays matchmaker. He has their number and is going to get them together as baby boyfriends. Or in the same age gaps vein: I'd enjoy the fic where Ogata proceeds from that "you're still interested in Hikaru" point in a very DIFFERENT way, because he's interested in Akira and sees it as a good stepping-off point to court him from.
I'm sorry I just really love Ogata and mostly I love him as being a helpful mentor but also I love age gap ships.
Yowamushi Pedal
The main thing I want here is captains OT3. Of all my sports fandoms, this is the one I'm most cryingly, embarrassingly here for, I've read what's scanlated of the manga and have seen each episode of the anime no less than three times, sometimes (several) more, because I just keep showing it to new people. I love virtually all of the cast an intense amount. It hits its themes of teamwork and reliance on your comrades and competition and perseverance in the exact ways I love to see these things executed. I love yowapeda.
And I love Kinjou Shingo and Fukutomi Juichi most of all. I just care so much for their respective views on what it means to be the leader of their team, what it means to win, and what it means to be strong. I love that when Fukutomi makes his grave mistake, Kinjou is the one to get over it first even though HE'S the one injured; Fukutomi is the one who absolutely beats himself up and makes himself atone for it. I adore Fukutomi's awkwardness and stiff manners and I adore the fact that Kinjou is exponentially more socially fluent, and I love the thought of Kinjou being so good for Fukutomi because Fukutomi is awful at dealing with people, but Kinjou understands him intimately and is perfect at dealing with him.
And I also love Arakita. I love Arakita's devotion to Fukutomi coupled with his horrific, lazy bad attitude, and I love the fact that him going to college with Kinjou gives him the opportunity to get similarly close with ANOTHER ace, because all I want is Kinjou gently taking his two boyfriends in hand without either of them fully realizing he's pulling their strings. I want Kinjou taking care of them, and I want the interesting power dynamics that their triangle full-on necessitates.
I'll take it in the canon context, but I'd also really love to see it in an AU setting. Probably even more so than canon. Yowapeda fandom does not have enough good AUs, and I'd love anything that keeps Fukutomi and Kinjou in positions of power, bonus points for Kinjou being well-suited to his role and Fukutomi a lot less so (possibly because he hyper-focuses on one aspect of it, HE IS STRONG, etc), and extra bonus points for Arakita being indispensable to one or both of them but not actually having POWER of his own. Setting-wise, I love futuristic settings and more urban/modern fantasy and I also love MAFIA OR CRIME AUS if that's something you're feeling (mafia don Kinjou, fans self gently).
Alternately, let me just. Put it out here. That the entirely unrelated yowapeda AU I want with great intensity is the one where, after so many people have told me that MIDOUSUJI IS INHUMAN!! he... really is inhuman. Eldritch horror Midousuji. Bonus points for, literally no other aspect of canon changes, Midousuji is just some supernatural creature attempting to blend in and ride bikes. I would not really be looking for shipping with that one but my favorite Midousuji ship is Midousuji/Ishigaki. (I'm also good with midosaka, honestly, I just intensely don't want to see them fuck whereas ishimi I am definitely here for them banging.)
