SASO Participant Data
I'm someone who loves statistics, so I've taken it upon myself to organize some data on how well represented different fandoms are within the SASO. I've broken this down both in terms of number of teams per fandom, and number of participants associated with each fandom. Below is the data as I have organized it.
The very first thing I did was tally up how many of the competing teams belong to each fandom represented in the shipping olympics. Out of forty teams (not counting the grandstand) the results were as such:
If you look at these numbers, what this means is that when main rounds happen, more than a third of the fanworks created will be from Haikyuu, while one-quarter of the fanworks will be from Yowapeda. While Free and Kuroko no Basuke are also well represented, two-thirds of the fanwork in main rounds will be about Haikyuu or Free.
If you're someone who likes visuals, let me put that in a pie chart for you.
And if you're someone who likes lists and want to see which ships within each fandom are being represented, I drew up some nice lists organizing eligible ship teams by their parent fandom.
From the team roster, I was able to determine how many participants are on each of these teams, and therefore how many participants are representing some ship (or general sports team) from each of these fandoms. Those numbers broke down like so:
As the purpose here is to track participation by fandom, these numbers exclude the 39 participants placed in the grandstand, as they do not have an obvious fandom affiliation.

However, for the sake of accuracy, I can also provide the numbers with the 39 grandstand participants included.
What does all of this mean? In the end, whatever you want to take away from it. These numbers function roughly as a popularity sampling of the fandoms nominated to the SASO (and it's therefore worth considering which fandoms were nominated without finding representation by a team), but it is my personal opinion that they do not entirely accurately reflect the popularity of each nominated fandom within the participant base of the SASO.
But hey, hopefully this was an interesting read for someone besides myself! More statistics potentially forthcoming (if I remain ambitious) as the SASO progresses.

I think part of that is a natural bias towards fandoms SASO organizers themselves are most active in, as those are probably the communities that got the most advertisement. I think the larger character casts in YP and HQ also lend themselves to a larger number of popular ships, and I think more people in those fandoms are multishippers as a direct result of that, too. By contrast, Free! really only has a small handful of extremely popular ships, and there are fewer multishippers, especially for rival ships, so once specific ship teams fill up, people are less interested in participating with something else.
The Free! teams have a higher average members per team than YP, anyway:
HQ!! - 6.4 members/team
YP - 4.8
Free! - 5.6
KnB - 4.2

I didn't write about it in this post but I have talked before about the cast sizes of yowapeda and haikyuu versus the cast size of free, and it is also my belief that this shaped the way the free teams were created and populated.
Going from AO3, free and KnB each have ~9,000 fanworks at present, while haikyuu is more in the neighborhood of ~6,000. Considering that I've personally watched that number skyrocket from somewhere in the mid ~1,000 range roughly a year ago, my perception is that haikyuu has just grown at a rate that drastically outpaces free and KnB, especially when both those fandoms seem to be on at least a little bit of a decline from their most active periods.
I wish I could track the entirety of how the SASO was advertised, because your suggestion that administrator bias helped skew the demographics is an interesting one. Have you looked at the different advertising posts that were made from the SASO tumblr? Something that was interesting to me was comparing how many notes each post got, when each was made for a different sports fandom. And iirc those numbers map out totally differently from the participation numbers.

I looked at the Tumblr advertising posts just now and the number of notes per series is as follows, ordered from the highest.
KnB: 168
YP: 145
HQ!!: 142
Daiya: 96
Free!: 66
Oofuri: 59
Eyeshield: 34
Super interesting to see KnB at the top, and Daiya with more notes than Free!, considering how the participants worked out ultimately.
I don't know any of the organizers personally, but the SASO Tumblr page does use a popular YP and HQ!! ship in its layout, as a T2 writer/artist, one of them personally invited me to participate and/or advertise for SASO (at least, I assume it was an organizer), so I definitely feel that they lean towards those two fandoms.
Another thing: because there are so many YP and HQ!! ships and so many people multiship, I think folks in these fandoms may be especially eager for a chance to champion for their favourite ships and to have some friendly rivalry. Meanwhile, Free! in particular has been marred by some really vicious ship wars, so a ship competition may be an immediate turn-off to them for that reason.

Anecdotal, but. I remember when the number of notes on the KnB post shot up overnight, so I feel these numbers may be subject to that tumblr phenomenon of one person becoming a nexus in circulating a particular post.
But in the end, the overall advertising numbers aren't THAT surprising to me -- I feel you're right about free, where the general population of the fandom would just be less interested in a shipping competition because of the fandom's dynamic.
(and on a related note, it's made me really happy to see how friendly rival free shippers are being to each other on BR0, because I know free has had problems with ship wars and I've been hoping that won't bleed into SASO)
While I've got you here, are there any other numbers you'd like to see out of SASO? I know I'm interested to see how fandoms are represented in terms of prompts/fills in bonus rounds where EVERYTHING is fair game, but imo that is likely to be too much data for one person to document manually.

As for other stats, I agree that fandom representation in the bonus rounds will be interesting. Prompts shouldn't be too hard to compile with DW's top-level comments only feature, but fills will be difficult to tally since they'll come in at different times and there will be non-fill comments in the second and higher level comments.
I'd be interested in the level of collaborated VS individual works submitted to the main rounds. The types of fills as far as art/writing/combo should be interesting too. I'd expect most will be writing or art+writing in combo. Wonder if we'll get a lot of solo drawn art or other types of media fills.

When I participated in this event's predecessor, I helped a friend compile spreadsheets of bonus round prompts. The HSWC had much higher participation numbers (I want to say in the neighborhood of 700-800 people) and it was an INCREDIBLE undertaking. I told myself I wouldn't do that this year, even with the smaller numbers, and yet...
(I am at least considering it, because I do not love my own sanity.)
With main rounds, I'm definitely expecting a lot of art + writing combos, but I'm also really curious to see anything made that's outside the digital art/writing box. What any given team CAN make depends a lot on the skills of each member, so it may be the case that some teams will be geared strongly towards art, or strongly towards writing, just from the team makeup.
With collabs vs individual efforts, I'd like to see a comparison but know it'll be dependent on captains stating who made what after the anonymity period ends. Depending on how and where captains give credit (or creators take credit) it may be really inconvenient gathering that info.

Ah, I'd forgotten about the anonymity thing. Again, not really familiar with how these types of things traditionally work. XD It'd be too annoying to go back and compile stats on these things after the fact, especially if it's dependent on captains editing the work with credit. Oh wellll.

I have a lot of respect for anyone organizing an event with participation in the multiple hundreds of individuals, let me tell you.
Tbh I feel like if creators were revealed on the comm, checking the stats on 40 works after the fact wouldn't be bad. But if that doesn't happen, we may have to go without, just for practicality's sake. :')
