Boston Update!
I had my vacation to Boston! It proved to be a delightful visit with a whole bunch of different friends as well as a good con weekend, so as promised, I will now give an update on that.
We will begin at the beginning, with Friday! I went to work in the morning and left for the airport directly from there in the afternoon. My airport experience was painless and I was in Boston by 5:30pm. I took a lyft to Jea's hotel where we chilled for a bit and where I left my stuff before running to the con center to meet Em and pick up my badge. The line for pre-reg was nonexistent by like 7pm on Friday so we made it back to the hotel very quickly, where we ordered in and hung out until Cassie, who was actually hosting me, was ready to leave for the night at about 9pm. We stopped into the H-Mart on the way home so apartment friends could get food and we could all pick up snacks, and were back at the apartment by maybe 11pm.
We did not sleep until about three in the morning, though, because Cassie had prep for cosplay and her panel to do and I am just terrible at sleeping.
Saturday! We got to con at about 8:30am in preparation for Cassie's 9am panel, which I promptly ditched out on the moment it began in order to go to the game room and PLAY JUBEAT. The lines were short for all of about two plays, at which point they hit three/four people deep, which is what I expect at most any point during con. I did my handful of plays and also! Met up with Yrin! And taught Yrin how to touch a cube! Part of my con experience now is just bringing friends to Jubeat.
Most of Saturday blurs together for me at this much removal. I was with Yrin for all of the morning and a good bit of the afternoon; we played jubeat, went to artist's alley, saw Laura and Bunny, got sandwiches in the mall, found June and Eric and hung out with them for a while, went to dealer's, and then I believe after that was when Yrin left. June and I went back through artist alley at least once, and Laura invited me to hotpot with her and a bunch of artist friends.
I met up with Jea and Em around 6pm or so and had a small early dinner with them in their hotel room and just, chilled until it was almost time for artist alley to close. I went back to AA, met up with Laura and Bunny and friends, and took a lyft to the hotpot place. It was a la carte style rather than all you can eat but the food was veeeery gooooood and it was just, a nice chill time with friends. We finished around 12:30am and I took a lyft back to Cassie's apartment by myself.
We once again failed to sleep at a reasonable hour, but I think it was only like... Maybe two in the morning when we got to sleep on Saturday, lmao.
Sunday! We once again got to con fairly early, but more like... 9:30am or 10am probably. Went to play Jubeat, met up with Yrin and June, taught JUNE to play Jubeat, got to show off by playing MY FAVORITE SONGS (aka the hardest songs I can do decently on) which are Sugar Song and Bitter Step and Wow Wow Venus (both are nines on extreme). Then I ran into my friend Niko in the line because I saw her tweeting about how cool it is that Jubeat is popular at AB and how it's always awesome when you see a small, unassuming person going at it on the machines. I started to excitedly reply about how I felt the same way!! Before realizing that Niko was talking ABOUT ME and was probably in line, it was incredible.
I spent a chunk of time after Jubeat with Yrin, June, and Eric where I shared my doujinshi and was conscripted into Rikkai, lol. I only signed up to take Niou and Yagyuu pictures of Yrin and June, which was VERY FUN, HONESTLY, I love my nice human dolls!! But then they put June's Rikkai jacket on my shoulders Yukimura-style so they could pretend to have buchou around and it was... Nice... The jacket is SO NICE and I'm so mad that shittily LARP-ing Yukimura with no wig and nothing else was honestly So Fun because now I want to ACTUALLY cosplay Yukimura and like, they tricked me. That is what happened.
We went through artist alley one last time to say goodbye to artist friends, Rikkai jacket and all, and then June, Yrin and I went to get frozen yogurt in the mall and to meet up with Em and Jea. Yrin and June headed out after froyo, and Em and Jea and I went to The Cheesecake Factory for our pre-planned end of con dinner.
I'm actually kind of impressed I remember as many specifics as this, I don't think I'm missing very much, lmao. I was staying with Cassie along with our friends Kalina and Al and I would see them in the evenings and mornings but didn't really go out of my way to hang with them at con, since we each had our own plans and we still saw a lot of each other at Cassie's house. It was honestly just... A really chill, generally uneventful con where I spent all of my time hanging out with friends and I couldn't be happier about that.
I said goodbye to Jea and Em around 6pm or so, which coincidentally lined up with when Cassie, Kalina, and Al were done helping a dealer friend break down to leave almost exactly, so I met back up with them and we all took a lyft back to Cassie's together.
We opened the gift box they'd received from the dealer as thanks for helping and watching them divide up their loot like pirates was DELIGHTFUL. We were all very silly and tired and making terrible jokes about milk soda, but we also succeeded in cooking okonomiyaki for second dinner and it was DELICIOUS so like, we were doing pretty good, for end of con! And we went to bed earlier than we had been!!
Monday! Al left fairly early in the morning but Cassie, Kalina, and I had the day together. We TRIED to go to the game store near Cassie in the morning but got there at 10:30 when the place opens at noon, AND WE WALKED THROUGH THE SNOW AND GOT VERY WET JUST TO MEET THIS FAILURE. Once we were home and warm we successfully did a round of anime speed dating, the thing where everyone nominates something they've wanted to watch but not gotten around to, or want friends to see but no one else has seen, with the goal of watching just the first episode of as many things that are unfamiliar to the majority of the group as possible. The things we watched were: Romeo x Juliet, Shirobako, Aoharu x Machinegun, the first Code Geass OVA, and A Place Farther than the Universe. It was fun! Aoharu ruined Cassie's life way more than I anticipated! Shirobako made me feel things, and antarctica anime made me actually weepy! I'm gonna have to keep watching both of those, though goodness knows when I'll get around to it.
We got late lunch at the H-Mart and Kalina left for her flight, after which Cassie and I proceeded to watch another six episodes of aoharu because again, ruining her life, before she started to fall asleep and we had to stop. We probably? Had dinner? And eventually went to sleep?? Time is fake; who even knows.
Tuesday! My designated Em day! Cassie had off work on Monday but was working Tuesday and Wednesday while I stayed with her, so she gave me an extra set of keys and I made plans to do other stuff during the day. I met up with Em near her apartment and we went to a cafe for breakfast, before running around that area of Boston while she showed me... Lexington Market, maybe is the name? We spent a lot of time in a comic store. I found all the worst manga in the comic store. It was incredible.
We also spent a lot of time just chilling outside her apartment because she needed maintenance for the water meter and they were taking five million years. Once we were finally able to GO INSIDE, I showed Em about six episodes of Prince of Tennis, because clearly my goal of the trip was just to show as many anime that would be ruinous to them to as many friends as possible. Em seemed to be enjoying it! I hope she watches more! I'm going to drag Em into tennis hell!! We finished around 7pm and I caught a train back to Cassie at maybe 7:30 for her housemates and their friends' weekly tradition of Taco Tuesday.
Cassie had conveniently forgotten that this week was Passover, however. So she'd primed me for like, maybe four other people besides ourselves for a quiet dinner with friends. The reality was twenty plus people for a Passover-themed dinner, which was not actually a seder but like, apparently the group had had a proper seder last year. I enjoyed it! It was nice to kinda do something for the holiday! But l o l I had not been remotely prepared.
We got home from dinner at maybe 10:30pm and watched more aoharu, up until the point where Cassie fell asleep with her clothes on and I just kinda turned out the light on us and accepted it was bedtime.
Wednesday! My designated Lemon day! She lives a good hour or more outside Boston but we made plans to go to the aquarium together, so we met up at Park Street, since it's where the green and red lines meet, got delicious breakfast at a very cute cafe, and walked over to the Boston Aquarium. We got the aquarium + IMAX ticket combo, which means we got to see LOTS OF FISH AND ALSO PENGUINS and went to see Great White Sharks 3D because I am a baby child and I looooove educational IMAX movies. We also! Got to touch rays!! We spent like, a whole entire hour at the stingray and shark touching enclosure, and I touched soooo many soft pancake friends, including the really big four-foot-wide one, and two sharks! One had an egg sac! I looooooove sea life!!!
It was raining when we went to get food and I tried to take us to a restaurant that DIDN'T EXIST ANY MORE because google lied to us, so we ended up very wet but also in the same area I'd been with Em the day before. So we went inside the mall and got food court Indian food which turned out to be DELICIOUS and it was just... A very nice day with a nice friend.
I went home to Cassie and just barely beat her back, finished watching aoharu because that was important, and departed to The Bus Dimension, which was not something Yrin had remotely given me adequate warning about and which turned out to be a bizarre and unnerving experience featuring an underground driveway beneath Harvard Square and a vanishing bus which TOTALLY was not on the arrival marquee but did manage to show up after all. And it took me to Yrin so like, mission success!!
We did not do anything of value at all on Wednesday night, we just played a horrifying amount of rhythm phone games together, which is like. A constant theme of the entire four full days I was with Yrin, lmao.
Thursday! Yrin took me to Harvard's little natural history (?) museum to look at rocks and uncanny valley glass flowers and it was NEAT but also, Yrin is cute, I love how much Yrin loves ROCKS and how proud Yrin was to bring me to these weirdass objects. The flowers absolutely were weirder and more uncanny valley than I thought to anticipate so like, delightful! After the museum we went to a lecture at one of the Harvard libraries, which was the actual activity we came on campus for. It was very interesting! It was also definitely a longer speech than was meant to fit in an hour time slot and rather than trimming it down, the presenter just committed to talking REALLY FAST. We both seemed to be kind of dazed by the time she was done, lmao.
And then we got dinner with my cousin Sam and his girlfriend slash life-partner-he-bought-a-house-with Alma! I feel like bringing a friend to meet family always runs the risk of being Weird, and my family in particular are just Extra Weird, but they're at least like... Often weird in similar ways to how my friends are weird so it often does work out. We ended up going earlier than planned and didn't have a reservation for a sushi place that was more popular than *I* thought to anticipate, so the wait for a table was an hour and we had to go kill time. We went into one board game store and went by like, three cafes before we found one that was actually open, but it was... Nice, I think. And sushi was soooooo nice, I let my cousin goad and enable me into ordering the restaurant's signature nigiri sampler on top of my typical sake don, which was a VERY EXPENSIVE decision but also a DELICIOUS decision and I have no regrets. Ahhhhhh everything I ate from that sampler was so good, I wish I could eat my weight in food like that. ;;;
And my cousin is sound director for the same theater where his girlfriend is director of... costuming or some other word for what is basically costuming, so they could talk to Yrin about theater, which makes me feel Warm And Fond. I love all my friends who are neck-deep in 2.5D anime theater productions. :')
Friday! This was our designated lazy day, which is just as well because it snowed and was gross outside. We tried to make waffles but blew a fuse and did not know it was a blown fuse right away, so we accepted that the waffle maker was not going to successfully make anything and turned the waffle batter into still quite serviceable pancakes, lol. This is STILL funny to me days later because I'd had a dream where I forgot about our waffle plans and left Yrin's house to get breakfast with someone else and BETRAYED HIM, and then in the end it was the waffles which betrayed all of us.
And then we watched like a million episodes of 07-Ghost because Yrin has been excited to show me this thing for weeks and weeks. Which turned out to be HILARIOUS because virtually the entire cast is some variety of terrible, especially the "looks sweet/pretty and unassuming but is actually a complete hell terror" thing that Yrin loves so it's like, the most Yrin piece of media I have experienced in an eternity, but that... Wasn't what Yrin originally watched it for at all. Meanwhile I was promised a fucky priest who smokes but WAS NOT WARNED the fucky priest is voiced by Suwabe and just, that was a mistake, the villain Ayanami is also a mistake, every part of this anime was a mistake but experiencing it with my friend was nice.
We did a really great job all weekend of actually eating three meals a day, also. I hope Samy is proud of us, we really were well fed and did not enable each other to starve and die.
Saturday! Designated June cooking day! Yrin picked up things to make butternut squash curry and June came over to prepare delicious food with us and we spent like, the entire time crying about tennis and stageplays, which was nice. I will never follow my friends into the degree of caring about actors that they're on but it's... Nice, to be involved in watching these productions enough to (more or less) understand what they're yelling about. My friends are, again: very cute.
We also watched even more 07-Ghost at some point on Saturday, and played even more rhythm mobage, and I definitely literally fell asleep on Yrin at some point, which I think I'd jokingly promised to do but had not... Really expected to ACTUALLY do. It was... A nice nap... It's fucking fine.
Sunday! The day when Yrin has jujitsu. I feel like every day wit Yrin was a fairly sedate day where we just... Took our time eating and doing small things together and it was honestly very nice and soothing. I feel like I joke a lot about being five years old because I don't really feel qualified to be A Functioning Adult and if I make jokes it's more acceptable to be kind of bad at things, but I also... Usually work pretty hard not to seem childish and to be put together. So it was nice just... Not doing that as much and being a weird useless cat with my friend who is also a weird useless cat and spending a lot of time flopping on said cat friend or BEING flopped on.
Yrin really is absolutely terrible at retaining like, any degree of body warmth, he is a fucking ice cube and it was impressive. Can I crochet my friend a cute hat to keep the warm in... I feel like a hat to keep the warm in would be good. I had so much warmth leeched from me this weekend but that was kind of nice too, lmao.
It was neat going to Yrin's jujitsu class though!! I really did watch a lot of it (and only spent a small amount of time texting...) and sure did appreciate the one headlock-escape move that one person joked was like walking a dog on a leash, ahaha. And after class we finished watching 07-Ghost, and Yrin finished reading my doujinshi, and I got to be sad and maudlin about going home in the morning.
Monday! Yrin made me leave at a reasonable time to avoid traffic and get through security and really, that's all there is to say about that, my flight was uneventful and I went home. :')
And went to the allergist, and received my package of fucky sanayuki doujinshi, and made the executive decision not to clean or grocery shop or do laundry in preparation for living in my own space again, I just rolled around in bed reading books and playing mobage and being very bad at outlining for tenipuri big bang.
I have like four days to finish my outline for tenipuri big bang and that is going Awesome. We will not speak about how awesome that is going.
This is a horrifically long TL;DR mess so if you read it, congratulations! You are stronger than I feel I ought to expect from you. In largest part this report exists just... So I have a record of what I did on my vacation. It was a good vacation! I'm going to miss all of my Boston friends soooooo much, especially Yrin. I miss having local friends who are cuddly and casual about physical affection so it was nice to be with Yrin and Em and everyone for a week and a half, but. I suspect I may have gotten just enough used to flopping on all my friends that I will really miss it now that I'm home. :') Oh well. :') I will go back to being touch starved, it's fine. :')
Boston was so good, when can I go back to visit my cousin's bees and also my friends.
We will begin at the beginning, with Friday! I went to work in the morning and left for the airport directly from there in the afternoon.
