An Excerpt: Entry From June
I wrote part of an entry back on June 12th and it has just been sitting in my drafts ever since then, unfinished, because by the time I planned to finish it enough time had passed to make it kind of obsolete. And by now WAY MORE TIME has passed and it's even MORE obsolete but I don't want to delete it so I'm just gonna... Shove it up in here.
I wrote bits about driving, commissions, writing, and part of Yrin's visit following memorial day weekend.
Driving: Dad and I bought a car!
It is a blue-gray 2017 Toyota Corolla and I am in love with it because it is Mine. This should be completely unsurprising to anyone who's ever heard me talk about robots or cars basically ever, but there it is. Driving it makes me really happy... We actually had 400 whole miles left of the original 36,000 mile company warranty but I've already burned through 100 of those so that probably won't even last me a month.
I kinda realized the other day, now that I have the car and have spent more time driving by myself, that I feel the same way about driving as I do about biking. It's this physical, technical task which I view in a somewhat gameified way; it requires enough thought to keep me mentally occupied and not antsy but not so much that I can't muse to myself and be alone with my thoughts. Rush hour traffic isn't my favorite and there's construction on my commute to work but even driving to work is like... This is a variety of alone time and I appreciate it.
I love my car. He still doesn't have a name even though I polled twitter for suggestions but I'll settle on that sooner or later. He is the most expensive thing I have ever owned and he is Wonderful.
Commissions: Seguing from the buying a car thing, because I am a ridiculous disaster person I must now pay my friends and/or other artists to draw artwork of my car as a human. I pinged a few friends and got quotes and this is totally financially irresponsible considering everything else going on with me but like... I can afford it. Gonna buy car art. Gonna make my friends make my car hot.
Writing: Tangentially related to commissions, basically as soon as I said writing was going well, all my motivation died again. First I was busy getting ready for Yrin to visit, then Yrin visited and I didn't want to use any of that time for writing, and then after that I was already out of the habit. A couple of the big things I was stressing out about will no longer be an issue after this week so I'm just... Hoping that in another couple days I'll be chill and can get back to it, because I still have a lot of work to do on my nonconathon assignment.
Yrin visit: And that brings me to Yrin's visit! Yrin was here the weekend AFTER memorial day, because he has a free day off from work around that weekend and it was a good time for him. He got here Wednesday night and left Saturday night. We had a very good and active visit!
Thursday, Ciry came down and IN SPITE OF THE THREAT OF THUNDERSTORMS we managed to pick up my sister from dad's, get Panera, go swimming at one of the neighborhood pools, and go see Detective Pikachu. It was! Really fun! And I'm glad my sister got to meet Yrin while he was here and go on an outing, since she doesn't get to hang out with people very often.
As a follow-up on those bits, I've driven a lot more (and well more on highways) and I'm feeling pretty good about driving at this point. I'm still a new driver and I'm still working on doing things Better and More Smoothly but I'm like... Passably competent! I drove Psiten somewhere and didn't freak them out! It's good.
I am postponing commissions until after I move. I didn't communicate this very well to any of my friends, but I also didn't get past initial inquiries so probably that's okay. I'm gonna shoot everyone I asked a "hey will you still be taking comms in October?" kind of message and hopefully once the move is done and I'm not living in fear of unexpected extra moving expenses, I can buy anthropomorphized car art.
I never did finish my nonconathon fic to my satisfaction. My original plan was very ambitious and like a dozen scenes and probably would have been between 12k and 15k words. That proved to be too much for me. I am happy with what I wrote and it does read as a complete fic, I'm just sad anyway that I cut off the slow Stockholm slide and the actual wedding of my MC to his deity.
I want to get back to writing more original stuff but I haven't figured out what to work on. I have various projects I have bits of planning for, but nothing where I finished the outline and am still happy with the shape of what I planned out. I probably won't work on anything until after I move, although maybe I will have some downtime in the chunk between my last day of work and my actual move.
And that's it for old updates!
