Fandom Growth Exchange: Dear Author Letter
Hello, mystery creator!
First, thank you for writing for me. My signup seems to be a greatest hits of animanga fandoms I've loved in recent years and I'm delighted our interests overlap on one of these counts.
That said, my optional details on AO3 are pretty specific this go-around, so I'd primarily like to make use of this space to talk about my general likes and dislikes in fiction. I've also given specific prompts for each of my fandoms, which you are welcome to draw from if you need a place to start and are equally welcome to ignore if you have an idea of your own you'd like to run with.
In general I adore stories with thoughtful characterization, good pacing, and strong worldbuilding. I love examinations of friendship and the ways people depend on each other. I like seeing tropes inverted or played with in unexpected ways. I also love caretaking and domesticity, and I feel that sort of "quiet," character-driven story would be a good fit for most of the pairings I've requested.
When it comes to things I'd like to avoid, I'm not big on angst. I can happily read things about characters making tough choices or being in untenable situations, but I just really dislike tragedy for tragedy's sake, or anything really over-the-top horrible. I'd appreciate if you also avoid any content to do with rape, abuse, terminal or mental illnesses, or homophobia as a plot device. I'd also prefer not to receive anything with pregnancy or child-rearing, or foot fetishes.
In terms of technical things to avoid, I strongly dislike first person and would prefer not to receive a story in that POV. I'm picky with second person, so unless you're really confident writing it and want to do something innovative, I'd recommend avoiding that as well.

Yowamushi Pedal
Canon-wise, I'm up to date on the anime and the original manga scanlations. I am not up to date on the rough draft scanlations, but at this point I've spoiled myself for more or less everything that can be spoiled for, so there's really no need to worry about that.
This is a hard fandom for me to give prompts for, because it's my primary fandom and the breadth of things I've discussed within it is so wide. But please know: Kinjou Shingo is hands-down my favorite character and anything that showcases him as an individual will be especially loved. One of my favorite things about Kinjou is that while he is 100% a manipulator type — he understands people and knows how to use that empathy to influence their behavior — he only puppetmasters people in ways that benefit them. He's a good leader with a good heart and that's so important to me.
Anyway, some scenarios, for the various ships I requested:
-Kinjou being unwilling to initiate some Dating Milestone with Miki (first kiss, touchin' under the shirt, first time, what have you) and Miki realizing this and happily walking him into it.
-Miki making Kinjou relax from all the Stressful Leadership Stuff he does. Bonus points for massage and domesticity or for casual bike riding together. Put Miki on a bike.
-Femdom where Miki steps on Kinjou and/or "wears the pants" in the bedroom in general.
-Kinjou being A Good Boyfriend and encouraging Miki in some Big Future Thing she's considering (the university she wants to go to? the field she wants to pursue? beginning to race in a recreational cycling leage? what have you.)
-Imaizumi going to Yonan when he graduates from Sohoku and moving in with Kinjou. Please give me quiet domesticity and cohabitation.

-AUs! I love AUs! I am totally going to recycle some from prompts I've made elsewhere but know that I love fantasy, sci-fi, and crime-related AUs most of all.
-Oldschool Casino AU where Kinjou is an enterprising card-counter who takes promising young Imaizumi under his wing to help him beat the house.
-Mob AU where Imaizumi is the pampered son of a well-established crime family. Kinjou is the head of an upstart new operation. He sees Imaizumi as a stepping-stone (he comes to see Imaizumi as more than that).
-Stage magic AU with popular magician Kinjou and his handsome bunny-themed assistant Imaizumi.
-If you want to watch me Actually Die consider writing a Batman Beyond AU in which Kinjou is Bruce Wayne and Imaizumi is Terry McGinnis. I'm not sorry.
-Kinjou visiting with Makishima in England for a summer during university. Please just give me lots of domesticity and quiet moments and trying to make the most of limited time together.
-Future fic where they're both adults pursuing very different careers (Kinjou is Science and Makishima is Fashion, so anything projected from there) but where ambitious Kinjou is very good at pushing Makishima to try things Makishima might be uncertain about.
-Kinjou and Makishima having a first date where Makishima is Very Insistent about paying for things. Really, anything exploring Makishima trying to express affection through material purchases versus Kinjou expressing it through casual touching would be beautiful.
-AUs! Never can go wrong with AUs! Kinjou and Makishima as spies. Kinjou and Makishima as supervillains. Kinjou and Makishima in a Pacific Rim AU being Science Side and studying kaiju together.
-Traveling magician Kinjou coming to the royal court where Makishima is a noble, in which they bond over their respective idiosyncrasies and over being societal outsiders.
-Imaizumi and Teshima having a non-romantic D/s relationship based around masochist Imaizumi being humiliated and pushed around. Bonus points for Imaizumi developing romantic feelings.
-Fic where Teshima had a crush on Imaizumi, who never noticed. After Teshima gets over this, Imaizumi develops a crush on him and makes an overture. Teshima is disinterested in dating but makes overtures of a FWB thing. Imaizumi settles.
-AUs! I still love AUs. Anything where Teshima views Imaizumi as a rival but Imaizumi is just indisputably better. Rival hackers. Rival magicians. Rival roboticists. The sky is the limit.

Canon-wise, I've watched both seasons of the anime and I play the game nigh-religiously, so feel free to draw on any and all related canon material as you see fit.
Eli/Umi is the crying rarepair of my heart and Nico & Hanayo is the matchup I feel no one gives much consideration to, so with either of these, any fic that celebrates the similarities between the two will delight me. Besides that, some specific prompts:
-Nico and Hanayo pursuing idol careers as adults in a professionoal sphere — Nico in front of an audience, Hanayo behind the scenes. They end up helping each other out.
-Nico and Hanayo organizing an actual idol appreciation club together, or going to other idol group lives together and geeking out as fans.

-Something set shortly after Eli joins muse and drawing from the scenes where Umi expresses relief to have someone like Eli (someone like herself) in the group.
-Eli and Umi bonding over dancing, considering that Eli is trained as a classical ballerina and Umi's family runs a school on traditional Japanese dance.
-In that same vein: adult Eli and Umi operating some kind of dance school together, or a business doing consultation on choreography for idol groups.
-Eli asking Umi on a date and Umi being so flustered and unbalanced that Eli has to spend half the date reassuring her and putting her back at ease. Just give me cute, awkward first dates.
-Umi running damage control on her best friends' friendship/relationship only to periodically seek the respite of her girlfriend's company and advice because she may love Honoka and Kotori dearly but even the most patient soul needs a break. (the side kotohono is welcome if you want it but if you like this one, I'd prefer to see it in silhouette and keep the focus on eliumi.)

Canon-wise, I've watched the anime and consumed fair chunks of supplemental canon as I come across them, so feel free to draw on any and all canon material.
Beyond liking Ishihara/Konno as a pairing where Konno may be the proactive one but Ishihara indisputably calls the shots, here are a few prompts if you'd like further suggestions:
-Ishihara having a casual relationship with Konno because her work keeps her too busy to properly date, and he's clearly interested, so why not take advantage of that?
-Ishihara and Konno marry and begin living together for the health/tax/etc benefits, with the agreement that they will dissolve the union if and when either of them finds a serious romantic partner. This never happens.
-D/s sexy fic where Ishihara literally steps on Konno, I'm serious, Konno being stepped on is Very Important to me.
-Anything in which Ishihara and Konno begin helping each other out with their respective careers in more and more ways and form a relationship through that.

Canon-wise, I'm requesting from animeverse, not gameverse, but I feel it's relevant to point out that I have played the SB69 game, if very casually. I cannot read any of the game text, but if you choose to write Retoree/Cyan and would like to draw on canon beyond the anime, have at it. With Dagger Morse and Grateful King, I assume sticking strictly anime is the only way to go.
Also I am entirely serious about Dagger Morse/Grateful King as a ship, and only a little bit sorry. It was an accident.
Anyway, prompt suggestions, if you'd like them:
-Cyan getting close to and beginning to date real world Retoree after she returns from the music world.
-Get-together fic set after Cyan and Retoree's big fight about how Cyan will eventually be leaving, along the lines of "we've made up and I accept that you have to go someday, but in the meantime, I still like you."

-Post-finale fic with a power reversal where Grateful King attempts to rehabilitate Dagger Morse now that he's been weakened / reverted to weird adorable chibi jellyfish form.

Canon-wise, I've watched the entirety of the anime but am anime-canon only. If you've also read the manga, avoiding direct spoilers would be appreciated (as I would kind of like to read it, eventually). However, this is a series where I feel "spoilers" are less of an issue, so if you're in this fandom with me: I'm very excited, do as you will!!
With this canon, I have a specific fic of my heart and if you feel up to catering to ANY part of that concept you will earn all of my love. I would adore future fic where Hachiken marries Mikage and takes over her family's farm, so that she can pursue her dream with horses while keeping the farm in the family and from being neglected. Meanwhile, Hachiken might be keen on the business side of farming but still has a lot of practical difficulties: enter Komaba, the perfect partner to compliment Hachiken and Mikage.
But spinning off from this, a few littler suggestions, if you're looking for ideas:
-Getting-together fic where all three negotiate interests and boundaries.
-Established relationship fic, showing how each can rely on the others, focusing on domesticity, anything in this vein of trusting and being comfortable with each other.
-Established relationship fic focusing on a dream of Hachiken's, Mikage's, or Komaba's — project the development of that dream however you see fit from canon — and on how the other two are able to support and encourage them.
-Fic in which any of the three encounters a problem, and how the others find out about it and help them work through it.
If it's not really obvious, I just want any sort of content where these three characters are stronger as a unit than they are alone or in pairs, because I really love that kind of dynamic.
Hikaru no Go
Canon-wise, I've watched the entire anime (an embarrassing number of times) and read the manga, so have at it. Honestly it's an old series that's been dear to my heart for years so I am impervious.
With my requests, my focus is definitely on "Ogata as a character" and anything that showcases the kind of person he is will delight me. I listed Ogata/Hikaru and Ogata/Akira in romantic ship format, but I'm equally happy seeing either relationship portrayed purely as a platonic mentorship. That said, some scenario suggestions.
-Ogata takes an interest in Hikaru from early on in the canon (and I'm thinking of him helping Hikaru become an insei in particular), so: fic running from this point showing how Ogata's opinion of Hikaru grows and changes, or showing a specific turning point in Ogata's opinion of Hikaru.
-Ogata being interested in "Sai" and pursuing Hikaru (professionally and/or romantically) out of the belief Hikaru is Sai.
-Canon-divergent fic in which Ogata deduces that Sai is possessing Hikaru, and chooses to woo/pursue Sai through Hikaru. I will love this played to any angle — comedy of errors, tongue-in-cheek, with narrative disapproval and a disaster outcome, with the outcome of Ogata coming to know Hikaru better in the process and transferring interest to Hikaru.
-The reality where all of Ogata's coaching Akira through his rivalry with Hikaru is because Ogata is Interested in Akira, and wants Akira to know where he stands with the other important person in his life before making a move.
-Some form of poly thing when everyone is older and professional Go players because I also love Akira/Hikaru and would like to see the contrast of how they relate to each other versus how they relate to Ogata.
-AUs! Part of what I love about Ogata being shipped with Akira or Hikaru is the power differential, where he is an authority both because of serving as a mentor and because he is a pro in a field they are still working to break into. Give me any AU (I love sci-fi and fantasy in particular) where Ogata has some position of authority where he needs to balance that against whatever relationship he has with Hikaru or Akira.

Canon-wise, I'm manga-only. I tried watching the anime but imo the pacing leaves a lot to be desired compared to the manga, so I put it down. I'm unaware of whether the anime portrays anything in a measurably different way than the manga, but if you're anime-only, well. We still clearly love the same characters. We got this.
Beyond what I've said in my optional details, here are a few scenario suggestions if you'd like more to go on:
-Agon and Hiruma trying to psych each other out before a match, bring on the mindgames and psychological warfare.
-Any non-football instance of Agon and Hiruma running mindgames on each other. Maybe they just love the thrill of the competition in any arena.
-Hatesex. My headcanon for Hiruma is that he's asexual but not sex-repulsed and specifically views sex as "just another weapon in the metaphorical arsenal." Show me Hiruma and Agon fucking for leverage, fucking as a way of figuring each other out, fucking as a means of getting the upper hand.
-Agon or Hiruma indisputably getting the better of the other. The "what" and the "how" can be anything, and I'm equally happy to see either at advantage. Just show me what the other does when he's actually backed into a corner.
-AUs! I love AUs! With these two I'd love to see any setting that would showcase their intelligence and ruthlessness, so: crime AUs, mob AUs, fight club AU, any kind of magical/fantasy AU with warfare (direct or strategic) in the foreground, sci-fi AUs, the sky really is the limit.

-Established relationship fic, showing how each can rely on the others, focusing on domesticity, anything in this vein of trusting and being comfortable with each other.
-Established relationship fic focusing on a dream of Hachiken's, Mikage's, or Komaba's — project the development of that dream however you see fit from canon — and on how the other two are able to support and encourage them.
-Fic in which any of the three encounters a problem, and how the others find out about it and help them work through it.
If it's not really obvious, I just want any sort of content where these three characters are stronger as a unit than they are alone or in pairs, because I really love that kind of dynamic.
Hikaru no Go
Canon-wise, I've watched the entire anime (an embarrassing number of times) and read the manga, so have at it. Honestly it's an old series that's been dear to my heart for years so I am impervious.
With my requests, my focus is definitely on "Ogata as a character" and anything that showcases the kind of person he is will delight me. I listed Ogata/Hikaru and Ogata/Akira in romantic ship format, but I'm equally happy seeing either relationship portrayed purely as a platonic mentorship. That said, some scenario suggestions.
-Ogata takes an interest in Hikaru from early on in the canon (and I'm thinking of him helping Hikaru become an insei in particular), so: fic running from this point showing how Ogata's opinion of Hikaru grows and changes, or showing a specific turning point in Ogata's opinion of Hikaru.
-Ogata being interested in "Sai" and pursuing Hikaru (professionally and/or romantically) out of the belief Hikaru is Sai.
-Canon-divergent fic in which Ogata deduces that Sai is possessing Hikaru, and chooses to woo/pursue Sai through Hikaru. I will love this played to any angle — comedy of errors, tongue-in-cheek, with narrative disapproval and a disaster outcome, with the outcome of Ogata coming to know Hikaru better in the process and transferring interest to Hikaru.
-The reality where all of Ogata's coaching Akira through his rivalry with Hikaru is because Ogata is Interested in Akira, and wants Akira to know where he stands with the other important person in his life before making a move.
-Some form of poly thing when everyone is older and professional Go players because I also love Akira/Hikaru and would like to see the contrast of how they relate to each other versus how they relate to Ogata.
-AUs! Part of what I love about Ogata being shipped with Akira or Hikaru is the power differential, where he is an authority both because of serving as a mentor and because he is a pro in a field they are still working to break into. Give me any AU (I love sci-fi and fantasy in particular) where Ogata has some position of authority where he needs to balance that against whatever relationship he has with Hikaru or Akira.

Canon-wise, I'm manga-only. I tried watching the anime but imo the pacing leaves a lot to be desired compared to the manga, so I put it down. I'm unaware of whether the anime portrays anything in a measurably different way than the manga, but if you're anime-only, well. We still clearly love the same characters. We got this.
Beyond what I've said in my optional details, here are a few scenario suggestions if you'd like more to go on:
-Agon and Hiruma trying to psych each other out before a match, bring on the mindgames and psychological warfare.
-Any non-football instance of Agon and Hiruma running mindgames on each other. Maybe they just love the thrill of the competition in any arena.
-Hatesex. My headcanon for Hiruma is that he's asexual but not sex-repulsed and specifically views sex as "just another weapon in the metaphorical arsenal." Show me Hiruma and Agon fucking for leverage, fucking as a way of figuring each other out, fucking as a means of getting the upper hand.
-Agon or Hiruma indisputably getting the better of the other. The "what" and the "how" can be anything, and I'm equally happy to see either at advantage. Just show me what the other does when he's actually backed into a corner.
-AUs! I love AUs! With these two I'd love to see any setting that would showcase their intelligence and ruthlessness, so: crime AUs, mob AUs, fight club AU, any kind of magical/fantasy AU with warfare (direct or strategic) in the foreground, sci-fi AUs, the sky really is the limit.
Anyway! I know this is really long and if you've read all of it, I commend you! (I honestly always expect to match on one or two fandoms at most and for my giftee to read only those prompts.) If you choose to write something from one of my prompts, that's great, but when it comes down to it, as long as you treat the characters well and try to honor the spirit of the relationship as I talk about liking it in my signup, I'm sure I will love whatever you create for me!
